Duk Duk

Born in Sydney in 1958, Stephen McLean moved with his family to Gove in the Northern Territory at the age of 13. At that early stage Stephen displayed a natural talent for art and was influenced by the local Yirrakala artists, notably aboriginal artist Wanjuk Marika. Stephen was tutored by Wanjuk and adopted the so-called X ray style. Stephen was given the name Duk Duk (meaning agile wallaby) by Wanjuk because he was a quick witted young man and a fast runner.

Eight years as a tour guide in the famous Kakadu National Park and Alligator River Region turned Stephen into a skilled bushman and matured his artistic skills giving him in depth knowledge of the local flora and fauna.

Experience and an affinity with the Australian Aboriginal Dreaming have combined to produce an artist with an exceptional style of art that is exhibited in galleries around Australia.

Stephen paints dreamtime and everyday scenes on parchment and canvas. "Knowledge grows with time spent close to many people. All art is not sacred and my art is a stylised version of the Arnham Land Aboriginal art with a personal touch of adventure in each painting. I paint from my own love of the Aboriginal people and their culture." Stephen has also painted alongside Wanjuk Marika, Clifford Possum, Alex Ngamajmirra, Wesley Nganjmirra and Bobby Nganjmirra.
